Rahul Gandhi’s Convoy Crashes on Purvanchal Expressway, Several Injured; SIT Formed
Rahul Gandhi's convoy collided with an ambulance and other vehicles near the 91-km milestone on Uttar Pradesh's Purvanchal Expressway while travelling to Sultanpur for an eight-year-old defamation case. Several people were injured, and an SIT has been formed.
The accident occurred near the 91-kilometre milestone on the Purvanchal Expressway. According to the available details, five vehicles in Rahul Gandhi’s convoy collided with an ambulance. Several people sustained injuries in the crash. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the incident.
Rahul Gandhi was travelling from Lucknow to Sultanpur to appear before the MP-MLA court in an eight-year-old defamation case involving Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The court was scheduled to pronounce its verdict in the case on October 26, with Rahul Gandhi expected to remain present during the proceedings.
The case dates back to the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections, when Rahul Gandhi allegedly made a remark about Amit Shah, who was then the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Objecting to the alleged remark, Sultanpur-based BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi on August 4, 2018. He alleged that Gandhi’s statement had damaged Amit Shah’s reputation.
Following a lengthy legal process, Rahul Gandhi appeared before the Sultanpur court on February 20, 2024. He denied the allegations against him and maintained that he was innocent. The court subsequently granted him bail.
Hearings continued as the court considered witness statements, evidence and arguments presented by both sides. After the proceedings, the court fixed October 26 as the date for delivering its verdict. Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to attend the court on the day of the decision.
The convoy accident has added a significant development to a day already marked by the closely watched legal proceedings. While Rahul Gandhi was reported safe, the injuries sustained by party workers, office-bearers and security personnel, along with the circumstances surrounding the collision, remain central to the investigation being conducted by the SIT.
